These wines go with everything

As a good guest at a dinner party, you’ll naturally bring along a bottle of something or other. But what if you have no idea what’s on the menu? No sweat, these five types of wine go with everything.

Bubbles
There’s always something to celebrate, so why not simply bring a bottle of bubbly? It’s undoubtedly the best way to start the evening on a festive note, but sparkling wine also goes with many different types of food. It works well with a charcuterie or cheese board, all kinds of fish and shellfish, light dishes and even fruit-based desserts. Just make sure you bring a ‘brut’, which is dry and goes with everything.
Crisp white
Prefer white? Go for dry wines with refreshing acidity. They pair well with light dishes, but also cut through rich sauces, making them a real crowd-pleaser. Choose a grüner veltliner, riesling or sauvignon blanc. If you prefer fuller-bodied wines, you could also go for a chablis: that gives you the fullness of chardonnay, but with lovely acidity.
Light red
Prefer red? Then go for a lighter variety. A full-bodied red wine really needs substantial, meaty food that won’t be overwhelmed by the wine. If scallops suddenly appear on the menu, nobody will be happy. Light red wine can even be paired with fish, as well as poultry or meat. Go for a pinot noir or its German equivalent, spätburgunder,
Rosé
The image of sweet rosé with an ice cube on a sunny terrace is thankfully slowly fading; rosé is actually delicious. A good rosé from Provence has the freshness of a white wine, but the body of a red wine, making it suitable for a great many different meals.
Dessert wine
For anyone who wants to keep drinking after the main course: bring dessert wine. There’s also a small chance that another guest had the same brilliant idea, which is an added bonus. If you choose a wine that has lovely acidity as well as sweetness, it’s delicious even without dessert. Go classic and bring a sauternes, or bring a German riesling auslese.
