They’ve done it again: gold for this Swiss Gruyère, the best cheese in the world
Unbelievable; you really must be an outstanding cheesemaker if you manage to win the prestigious World Championship Cheese Contest with your cheese out of 2,978 entries, and then simply pull off the same feat again the very next time! Hats off to this hero for winning a championship that makes our mouths water. Almost three thousand cheeses—if only you could be a judge there…
The winning cheese of 2022 at this prestigious cheese competition in Wisconsin, America, is once again the Swiss Gourmino Le Gruyère AOP, made by Michael Spycher of the Mountain Dairy Fritzenhaus cheese house. And if that sounds familiar: it absolutely is, because last time, in 2020, this type of cheese also won the biennial competition!
Three-time champion
In 2020, Sabina also wrote about this winning Gruyère, and it gets even more impressive because this cheese had already won this championship in 2008 too. I think we can conclude, following the jury’s lead, that Gourmino Gruyère is insanely delicious cheese, and that we should make sure, right away, that we get to taste it in the Netherlands someday. Winning Swiss cheeses
The World Championship Cheese Contest is not the only competition of its kind, but it is a highly prestigious one. The championship has been held since 1957. Switzerland was definitely on a roll this year, because second place also went to a compatriot of the winner—namely, the Appenzeller® from Käserei Niederburen AG.
Dutch glory
Once again, our small but impressive cheese country received plenty of praise. Two years ago, a Gouda cheese from Lutjewinkel won the bronze medal in the grand final. This year, 29 different countries took part, and the Netherlands went home with seven gold medals in various categories. Once again: hooray—and trot off to the cheesemonger now!
