This French herb blend is one you’ll want to bring back to the Netherlands

Forget pepper and salt— from now on, you’ll want to sprinkle persillade on absolutely everything. This delicious Provençal herb blend is only sold in France and makes every dish tastier in an instant. On the way home from holidays in France, my boyfriend and I always stock up on a huge supply. Just before we reach the Belgian border, we take the exit to the last Carrefour along the route and fill a shopping basket with the jars.

Persillade is hugely popular in French cuisine. It consists of two basic ingredients: parsley and garlic. The name persillade also comes from the French translation of parsley: persil. Other ingredients include onion, black pepper, salt and nutmeg.
Front-row in the spice drawer
Persillade always has a front-row spot in my spice drawer because I reach for it almost every day. It’s delicious with meat, fish (especially mussels!), vegetables and dipping sauces. It’s also a must for gourmet cooking. Or sprinkle it over a sliced tomato or sliced cucumber and you have a tasty snack.

Maxi size for maxi fans
At Carrefour, they sell persillade in maxi-size jars. Ideal if you want to stock up for a year. One tip: choose a supermarket inland in France. If you visit one close to the Belgian border, you run the risk that someone got there before you and the shelf is empty. I’m not the only fan of these sought-after spice jars, after all.
And are you a fan of persillade? Then be sure to bring back some jars of Ajo y Perejil seasoning from Spain, too. ‘A golden tip from my ex-mother-in-law 25 years ago (I feel very old now),’ says our hardcore Ajo y Perejil fan and editor-in-chief Sharon. ‘This garlic and parsley herb blend instantly makes me feel like I’m in Spain. Delicious on grilled meat or fish!’
