This is how much I paid for a portion of fries at FEBO—is that even normal?!
Sunday in the city and craving some fries: it ended up costing me dearly. Where you used to get a huge family bag for this amount, I got two miserable little trays of golden-yellow fries at FEBO. At the location right in the heart of Amsterdam city center, mind you. But this price—is it even normal?
The madness of rising prices
I love FEBO, I really do. Pulling a horizontal croquette, that’s powerful cultural heritage, isn’t it? And yes, I know. Prices have gone up everywhere; potatoes, energy, staff, trays, transport… everything has become more expensive, I get that. But this? Almost five euros for a miserable little tray of fries with mayo?
The location will of course play a role—we are on Nieuwendijk, after all—but that doesn’t justify such an absurd price, in my opinion. In fact, you’d be better off going to the hugely popular Fabel Friet instead..
Almost 5 euros. For a portion of fries
I paid €4.80 for a portion of fries with mayo at FEBO. And this wasn’t even the large portion! It was a medium fries. I was almost ten euros lighter for two portions. The price of fries has risen sharply in recent years due to various economic factors. Energy prices, staff costs, increased transport costs, and of course food packaging (snack bars are angry too because of those plastic trays).
So yes, your fries are getting more expensive, but shrinkflation means you can no longer even consider your medium fries a proper lunch.

Because what the hell, my fries were much smaller than I expected! Where you used to get a decent amount for a medium fries, it’s now a mini portion that you can swallow in one bite. I honestly thought I was being conned and looked for a false bottom, but no: apparently this is how small a medium fries is now.
The good old family bag
That’s what I thought of as I worked my pathetic little tray of fries down at FEBO. I had flashbacks to the family bag of fries from years ago. That wonderful big bag we used to pick up on Sunday evenings. Cheap pleasure for the whole family. But now… well, if you do the math.. you’ll easily be down €20 to €30!
Philosophically speaking: when you consider the 32% of households in the Netherlands that can’t make ends meet, it’s not hard to understand that rising prices at snack bars are a microcosm of the broader economic problems in our country.
