Thirsty tales

This is the most expensive tea we’re currently drinking, and now we don’t want anything else

Thought you were already going high-end with matcha or a fancy Japanese sencha? Think again. Manuka Ti is the tea you’ll want to show off with now. This 100% herbal tea is made from the leaves of the New Zealand manuka plant – the same plant responsible for that magical manuka honey. The taste? Herbal with a subtle sweet undertone. The price? €14.95 for 14 sachets. And yes, we’re more than happy to pay it.

The Maori called the manuka plant ‘taonga’ (treasure) and had already been using it in the 13th century for all kinds of things: as medicine, in the kitchen and for an extra dose of natural power. Today, the plant still turns up everywhere – from honey to skincare – and now in your teacup too. The leaves are sourced directly from New Zealand and nothing else is done to them: no blends, no sweeteners, no strange additives. Manuka Ti contains no caffeine and no calories, so you can enjoy it at any time of day without lying awake or consuming extra sugar.

How to brew manuka tea

Luckily, you don’t have to be a tea sommelier to brew Manuka Ti perfectly. With regular tea, you don’t leave the tea bag steeping for very long, but you can here. You can simply leave the herb sachet in the hot water. The flavour may become more intense, but it won’t become stronger or more bitter as can happen with black or green tea. You can even refill it a second time, when it tastes even better. Here’s how to make a delicious cup of manuka tea in 2 steps:

  1. Heat the water to just below boiling point. This brings out the best in the leaves without ruining them.
  2. Let the sachet steep for at least 5 minutes. Yes, the tea stays light in colour, but that doesn’t mean it’s weak.

So, is this tea worth the high price? Absolutely. After one sip, we don’t want anything else now. Want to try it too? You can order Manuka Ti here. #nospon
