This is the rule of thumb for the perfect salad

“Do you want to prepare the salad?” I can still hear my mother saying it. Whether we were eating spaghetti, nasi goreng or potatoes, vegetables and meat, in my childhood home we al-ways had salad with dinner. Of course, as a teenager I never felt like lifting a finger, so it was simply lettuce, cucumber and tomato. If only I had known this rule of thumb (and actually felt like helping). We would have had much tastier salads on the table back then.

Recently, someone made a rather dramatic appeal on Twitter (X): why are salads so incredibly boring?! I’m not as desperate as this man, but I do get much happier from a well-filled salad than from a dry bowl of lettuce. From Lynn van de Vorst, a fan of my favorite foodfluencers, I discovered a brilliant rule of thumb that I now always apply when I “have to prepare the salad.”
Cheese, fruit, nut, herb
What is this rule of thumb? Cheese, fruit, nut, herb. If you mix these ingredients together, you’ll always have a perfect salad. After all, you’ll have a bit of everything: sweet fruit, salty cheese, a savory nut and a fresh herb. You’re also mixing textures here. Cheese and fruit are often soft, while nuts add bite to the whole. A party in your mouth, in other words.
Hit the nail on the head
So what can you make? Lynn, for example, goes for a salad with strawberries, burrata and a gremolata made with pistachios and basil as the base. She adds a little balsamic vinegar for flavor. But of course, you can really let yourself go. Melon, grapes, figs; feta, mozzarella, goat cheese; pecans, pine nuts, walnuts; parsley, chives, mint… Let your creativity run wild!
Are you really striving for total perfection? Then also make sure you don’t make these 14 mistakes when putting together a salad. And we all know that a delicious dressing really is the cherry on top. That’s why we’re also happy to share our 8 favorite salad dressings. You’ll really hit the nail on the head with that delicious salad of yours, I’m sure of it.
