Twitter (X) is sometimes called the toilet wall of the internet—you encounter so much anger and nastiness on that platform. One heated debate about politics, religion and the media follows another tirade of abuse. But a culinary rant like the one we saw from television producer Elan Gale years ago is still rare. Because he completely loses it over… boring salads.

Why are salads so boring?!?

His argument reads as though he sat hammering away at his keyboard like a child having a tantrum, without taking a breath, his face bright red and stamping his feet on the floor. The occasional swear word, capital letters here and there and furious advice. Calm down, Elan, we agree with you. Boring salads are a crime against the culinary world and they MUST NOT be tolerated. We’ve lined up his arguments for you once more.

9 tips to do it right

  1. All the salad ingredients need to be seasoned. Salt and pepper on tomatoes, lemon juice over avocado. His advice: ‘Season everything as if you’re going to eat it on its own.’
  2. A boring salad is caused by boring lettuce. Buy something other than that eternal iceberg lettuce for once; mix arugula, lamb’s lettuce, frisée and romaine.
  3. Don’t be afraid of hot ingredients. Chili peppers! Radishes! ‘Add some damn SPICE in there!’
  4. Add herbs to the salad: coriander, parsley, basil, dill—as long as it has flavor.
  5. If you don’t like feta, you’ll just have to learn to eat it, Elan believes, because cheese in a salad is delicious. And not that feeble grated mozzarella. And may we immediately make a case for halloumi while we’re at it?
  6. Make a dressing: lemon juice, olive oil, vinegar and something to bind it. Or hey, free tip from our colleague Sharon: drizzle some crispy chili oil over your mozzarella salad. One more tip: this is the secret ingredient that makes your salad dressing 100x better.
  7. Horseradish is a must. Don’t like it? Tough luck. Or use mustard, garlic, honey or Tabasco. Or Thai fish sauce (and of course he writes that in capital letters too).
  8. See what’s in your vegetable drawer and throw it into the salad.
  9. Your salad is only as boring as you make it yourself. Every year is the year of ‘exciting salads’. Period.
