This is the tastiest sausage roll in North Brabant

worstenbroodje

The sausage roll is a phenomenon that is simply part of everyday life for people in the south of the country. I can picture children growing up in North Brabant going to school with sausage rolls in their lunchboxes. For me, as someone from Amsterdam, this delicacy is not something I take for granted. Recently, however, I had the pleasure of sinking my teeth into such a beautifully golden-brown sausage roll.

Vught, the Holy Grail

Recently, I spent a day and a night in the city of beer and Bossche Bollen: Den Bosch. I woke up with an incredibly hungover craving for sausage rolls, because, well, when in North – Brabant you eat worstenbroodjes. But I only wanted the very best. When I managed, with some difficulty, to reach my phone and type in the words “tastiest sausage roll North Brabant,” Google pointed me towards Vught. The Holy Grail of sausage rolls. Something with ‘keilekker’ – I jumped straight into the car.

McDrive for sausage rolls

After a 10-minute drive, I arrived at the bakery called ‘Brabantsche worstenbroodjes’. If sausage rolls are the only thing you sell, they can hardly be anything but good, right? The bakery turned out to be a sort of production kitchen on a beautiful, old, abandoned site surrounding a fort. It took a little searching, but the smell of fresh rolls showed me the way. And I wasn’t the only one. Cars were constantly coming and going, a kind of McDrive for sausage rolls. Once inside, I saw five people rolling sausage rolls as if their lives depended on it. And what did I discover? This wasn’t even the actual production kitchen! Brabantsche Worstenbroodjes also produces for hospitality establishments, businesses and hospitals in North Brabant, but this large kitchen and hundreds of fresh rolls were solely for private customers who, like me, simply drove up. What a production!

Golden-brown happiness

Despite the quantity, the quality had been well maintained. I bought ten, because I was hungover and, hey, if all the signs were pointing in the right direction, there was no way I could stop at two rolls. On the way to the car, after my first bite, I immediately turned around to buy another ten. Ten. The golden-brown exterior, the perfectly baked dough, the moist filling and the well-seasoned meat: everything about this sausage roll is just right!

With a bag of warm sausage rolls in hand, I took a walk around “De Ijzeren Man” lake in Vught, and my hangover disappeared like snow in the sun thanks to the cold wind and warm rolls. I know, I’m not from Brabant. But to me, these will forever be the tastiest sausage rolls in North Brabant.
