This is what you should eat so you don’t get bitten by mosquitoes

Mug

Mosquitoes, perhaps the most annoying insects on earth. Besides the sound of fingernails on a blackboard and cracking knuckles, the buzzing of mosquitoes also drives me crazy. But aside from the buzzing, they can also bite you. And these foods are said to prevent the latter.

Want to keep mosquitoes away from your body? Adjust your diet with the products below and hopefully your body will remain mosquito-free this year.

Garlic and onion

Eating garlic and onion is often suggested as an option for keeping mosquitoes at bay. They contain allicin, and consuming it is said to alter your body odour and thus ‘hide’ you from mosquitoes. It is important to eat the garlic and onion raw, otherwise the allicin disappears.

Lemongrass

Not keen on eating raw onion or garlic? Lemongrass is also said to work, as it contains citronella oil, known from all kinds of candles and mosquito repellents. Eating lemongrass is also supposed to work. Lemongrass is widely used in Asian cuisine, so get started with this Thai Penang curry!

Chilli pepper against mosquitoes

For the spice-lovers among us: eat as much chilli pepper as possible! These peppers contain capsaicin (which causes that burning sensation on your tongue). Insects don’t like it, which is why it is already widely used in organic insecticides.

Tomatoes, beans and lentils

Tomatoes, beans and lentils all contain a lot of thiamine (vitamin B1). And a diet high in thiamine can help keep mosquitoes away from you. As with many remedies of this kind, there is plenty of debate about it. So if you still get bitten despite this diet, you can also rub tomato juice on your bump to counteract the itching. Hopefully that will help.
