This man found caterpillars in his broccoli and let them grow into butterflies

Imagine this: you buy broccoli. From your greengrocer, at the market or at the (local) supermarket. Wherever. You get home and see that there are caterpillars crawling around inside. What do you do? Scream? Throw the broccoli away? Ask the shop for compensation? Or raise the little creatures as if they were your own children and report on it on Twitter?

British radio presenter Sam Darlaston chose the latter and now officially calls himself a ‘caterpillar dad’. It all started with the broccoli Sam bought at the British supermarket chain Tesco on June 11. At first he was shocked, but that feeling disappeared like snow in the sun when he realised that he could also see these green rascals as pets and a lockdown hobby project.

He reported extensively on Twitter, and it’s hilarious:

It didn’t stop with that one broccoli; there were caterpillars in another broccoli too:

Just like his housemate. The two could start an entire caterpillar sanctuary.

Sam did ask Tesco for compensation for caring for the little creatures, but Tesco was not exactly generous.

Sam says goodbye to his beloved children. A few are still in the nest, but that won’t last much longer either. Farewell, kiddos!
