Italiaanse adresjes Rivierenbuurt Amsterdam

In the United States, several cities have their own Little Italy. You’ll find a colorful collection of Italian spots in New York (Manhattan) and San Diego, while Chicago also has its own neighborhood with Italian restaurants. But did you know that Amsterdam has a Little Italy too? In the Rivierenbuurt, you’ll find lots of lovely Italian spots within walking distance of one another. We’ve listed them for you.

Little Italy

Originally, the term ‘Little Italy’ was used for a neighborhood where many Italian migrants lived. Naturally, Italian shops and restaurants followed. Gradually, the new residents created a small home base filled with the scents and flavors of their homeland. The best-known Little Italy is in New York, with Mulberry Street as its highlight. But outside the US, you’ll also find neighborhoods that have become distinctly Italian. There’s a Little Italy in Toronto, Melbourne and Buenos Aires, among others.

But hey, Amsterdam has a Little Italy too—not in the purest sense when it comes to Italian migrants, but anyone in the mood for an Italian adventure will be very well catered for in Amsterdam’s Rivierenbuurt. So many delicious Italian restaurants and ice cream parlors in one place! We’ve listed them for you.

1. Krusta Pizza Bar & Restaurant
Krusta is located on Europaplein in Amsterdam, opposite the RAI and next to Greek restaurant Kaia. You’ll eat delicious pizzas here in a friendly restaurant with cheerful service. Bonus: when the sun is shining, you can eat your pizza on the spacious terrace. And for those who want to eat pizza during the European Championship: they have a screen on the terrace here. Too bad Italy has been eliminated, but you’ll be sitting here molto bene.

2. Pisa IJs
People from all over the city queue up at this ice cream parlor. It’s a true classic, an institution, and according to many, still the very best ice cream parlor in Amsterdam. You’ve been able to come here since 1935, and by now there are more than 60 different flavors to choose from.
Scheldeplein 22

3. Insieme
Italian cuisine is characterized by seasonal, high-quality ingredients, and that’s exactly what you’ll be served here. Fresh burrata from Puglia, Risotto alla Pescatora, traditional Tuscan gnocchi and sgroppino to finish; delicious! And an added bonus: the cozy terrace.

4. Venetië IJs
I’ve always felt that there are two camps: Team Pisa and Team Venetië. These two ice cream parlors are just a stone’s throw from each other, and both have their own loyal following. Unlike Pisa, Venetië has its own terrace.
Scheldestraat 68

5. Feduzzi
Feduzzi is an Italian delicatessen, lunchroom and catering shop all in one. This place has been here since 1981 and is known for its delicious sandwiches. Shopping here is a real treat, because everything looks equally tempting.

6. Buon Gusto d’Italia
Buon Gusto d’Italia means ‘delicious flavors from Italy,’ and you can enjoy them both indoors (with air conditioning when it gets hot like in Italy) and outdoors (with heaters when it gets hot like in the Netherlands ;). Not the most beautiful interior, but there’s a TV too, if that’s your idea of cozy.

7. Pizza Project
In 2018, Pizza Project started making pizzas for friends and neighbors in their backyard. With a food truck and two restaurants by now, the project is getting increasingly out of hand. And we have no problem with that, because here you can eat the most delicious light, airy pizzas on the spacious, sunny terrace with its striking red awnings. Tip: order a carafe of Aperol to go with it. Enjoy!

8. Peperoncino
Peperoncino is both a restaurant and a small supermarket. All the products come from Italy and have been specially selected by the proud Italian owner. There are few seats (inside and outside), but once you’ve managed to get a spot, you’ll be very comfortable here. Mr. Peperoncino bakes delicious pizzas and focaccias at the back of the small establishment, and his charcuterie is also highly recommended. Definitely order the ‘Nduja—his pride and joy.

11. CIRO 1939
A hit with delivery services. Understandably so, because just look at what’s in the display case! The most delicious antipasti, heavenly lasagna, pastas and dolci. And there are also lovely products in the cabinet, fresh from Italy. Not only the ingredients but also the chefs come from Italy. Fly, don’t run!
