This supermarket has shopping carts with bicycle bells to keep people apart
Living 1.5 metres apart is something we’ve really had to stick to for the past few months. For most people, however, that’s bloody difficult (we feel you!) Supermarkets in particular are increasingly seeing that some customers are struggling to follow this rule. Supermarket Coop in the Zeeland village of Hoek therefore came up with a playful solution to lend customers a helping hand.
Ding dong
Keeping your distance—isn’t that easy? Especially with this snack calculation, which always tells you what 1.5 metres is. Yet supermarket owner Eric Ruben noticed that many people were flouting the rule. And of course, that’s not the intention. Instead of playing police officer himself, he bought 30 bicycle bells from the local bike shop and attached them to the shopping carts so everyone could remind one another of the rule in a friendly way: “This is more fun than playing police officer,” he told Editie NL.
Temporary chaos
Bicycle bells on shopping carts? Surely that can only lead to complete chaos?! According to the supermarket owner, it’s not too bad. Except when lots of children are sitting in the unfolded shopping-cart seats. Then the supermarket is flooded with ringing bells. Most customers can laugh about the bicycle bells. Others don’t like them at all. Fortunately for them, the campaign is nothing more than a joke, and the bicycle bells will disappear from the shopping carts again in a few days.
