This ‘tuna’ is pretty groundbreaking

At Wagamama, not only belly-pork ramen slurpers can find something to enjoy — vegans are well catered for too. They have great tofu noodles and bang bang cauliflower, for example, and the company loves innovating and sees January as a great month to boost vegan dishes. That’s why they’ve developed something else special: vegan ‘tuna’ in steak-like slices, made from (you’ll never guess)…

Watermelon! Say whuuttt??
Yep. Dehydrated watermelon that is then sliced very thinly, briefly fried over high heat, and served warm. Delicious with white rice, avocado, bimi, guacamole and miso-sesame sauce, this is a dish with which Wagamama pulls out all the stops to show that plant-based food doesn’t have to be inferior in flavour to meat or fish dishes.
Deliciously exclusive
For now, the ‘tuna’ is only available on the menu in the United Kingdom, where most new products are launched and, if successful, rolled out in other countries. A manager at the company told us they “almost certainly know that the dish will soon be added to the menu at Wagamama NL”, so be patient a little longer if you absolutely must try it! But if you already had a trip to London booked this month, you can simply pop into a Wagamama after a bagel or a Full English to give it a try…
