This Utrecht sandwich is cheap and tastes like heaven

Are you, like me, such a pretentious native Amsterdammer who isn’t often found outside the ring road? Because when it comes to food and drinks, everything can be found in our beautiful Mokum? Well, let me tell you something: Bigoli. Quickly hop on the train to Utrecht.

Ciao Italia

Bigoli is the perfect traiteur, delicatessen shop and sandwich bar all in one. You walk in and don’t know where to look. A cabinet filled with delicious Italian wines, sauces, types of pasta and Italian Cantuccini biscuits. Heavenly! But the real showstoppers are in the display case. A rich selection of cheeses, mostly Italian, as well as a meat counter with special sausages and other cold cuts. As befits a traiteur, they also have delicious freshly made salads, pasta, lasagnas and desserts to choose from. Think tiramisu and homemade cannoli with a limoncello filling. Drooling yet?

The tastiest sandwich in Utrecht

At the lovely guy behind the cash register, we ordered a coppa di parma sandwich and a porchetta sandwich. “Would you like that with mushrooms or grilled vegetables?” After which the guy himself added with a wink: “go for the mushrooms, they’re really tastier”.

The combination of the crispy Italian roll, marinated, gently fried mushrooms and spicy mustard dressing: pure perfection! And I haven’t even mentioned the porchetta: wonderfully tender pork belly roulade, generously piled onto this divine sandwich. To make things even better: the sandwich costs € 5.15.

Try finding that in Amsterdam. I think I’ll be leaving the ring road more often.
