This video shows the huge difference between European and American kitchens

amerika-vs-europa

Before I had ever been to America, I already dreamed about it. I really do have a love for that country (as strange as things can be there) and find their habits so interesting. Especially when you compare them with European and/or Dutch households. Maybe mainly because you don’t necessarily expect it; if you travel to the Philippines, Myanmar or another Asian country, you know that things will be VERY different. But that’s the case in America too.

What always stood out to me in films when I was younger was that—in my opinion—life-threatening hole by their kitchen sink. Everything you put into this terrifying waste disposal is immediately ground up, so your fingers absolutely must not get stuck in it (which did happen in the bad horror films I watched). I have never seen a kitchen in Europe with such a life-threatening device.

Heating water in the microwave?

Just imagine: you have guests over and your guest wants a cup of tea. You put the kettle on, right (or of course you have the luxury of a Quooker)? Well, not in America. There, they simply put a cup of water in the microwave to heat it up. HUH? That sounds so strange. Now that I think about it, it might be faster if you only want to make one cup of tea, but I still can’t see myself doing it anytime soon.

A life without a cheese slicer

In any case, I think the cheese in America shouldn’t be allowed to call itself cheese at all, but that’s a whole different story. They mainly use pre-packaged slices of cheese there (which, again, don’t necessarily taste like cheese), and they wouldn’t know what to do with a cheese slicer. They don’t keep eggs in the fridge either, but store them outside it. Although that’s naturally another point of discussion: whether you should keep them refrigerated—but everyone I know does.

Well, see for yourself: this is what a standard European household looks like—something Americans find bizarre.
