De Leest - Jacob Jan Boerma en Kim Veldman

The Netherlands is losing a three-Michelin-star restaurant. Jacob Jan Boerma and Kim Veldman announced this morning that they will close the doors of their restaurant De Leest in Vaassen later this year.

In a press release, the couple said they want to spend more time with their young son, but are also ready for ‘new culinary challenges’.

Pizza & Amsterdam

Specifically, this means that in March 2020 they will open their ‘first new concept restaurant’ in Amsterdam and that they have international ambitions. The chef revealed to RTL nieuws exactly what that concept is: pizza! Pizza with Michelin stars? “That restaurant won’t receive a star,” says Boerma, but: “We are going to do something with the crust that no one has ever done before.”

Last and new opportunity

So if you want to eat at De Leest one more time, you need to be quick. As far as we can see on the website, you can still make a reservation until and including December 26. Too late? Or no time? Boerma told RTL nieuws that he will open another restaurant one day, where he will once again aim for a Michelin star.

History

Seventeen years ago, in 2002, restaurant De Leest opened its doors and earned its first Michelin star within five months; a second Michelin star followed in 2007, and in 2013 came the highest possible achievement: the third star.

After De Leest closes, only two three-Michelin-star restaurants will remain in the Netherlands: De Librije in Zwolle and Interscaldes in Kruiningen.
