TikToker eats at the world’s best restaurant and advises everyone against it
One of the advantages of TikTok is that it shows you things you’ve never experienced yourself. I’ve wanted to go to Noma for years, but I actually had no idea what it really looked like inside these days. Then TikToker Tansu Philip appeared on my For You Page, lucky enough to have dined there. Well, of course I sat down to watch. It can only be enjoyable, right? Nope: she thought it was awful. And that’s what her entire TikTok is about.
‘HOW?!’ was my first thought when I read in her caption that she absolutely would not recommend it. The best restaurant in the world—and you don’t like it? ‘She must have thought it was too expensive,’ I thought next. I can understand that: you really have to love food to spend this much on a dinner. But nope, that wasn’t it either. She simply didn’t think it tasted good.
‘What are those flowers doing on my plate?’
Right, it quickly became clear to me that Tansu isn’t exactly a foodie, given that she was startled by the edible flowers in her first course. It happens, and foodies are allowed to go out for fancy meals too. But if you don’t like mushrooms or cauliflower and still decide to eat at Noma—one of the very best restaurants in the world for years—during their VEGETABLE menu, then you’ve really lost me.
Still, I kept watching, because I was curious to see what all the courses looked like. And her commentary became increasingly refined: ‘this was a cauliflower waffle. I don’t like cauliflower, so this course was just like… whatever.’ Strong. Followed by: ‘then we got this stuffed pepper situation.’ To describe a course from a menu that costs a fortune as a ‘situation’—well, I have thoughts about that. And that one, incidentally, was subsequently described as: ‘kind of… whatever.’
Right, you’d better just watch the TikTok yourself. Tansu Philip wins the award for the most uninterested guest Noma has ever had the pleasure of hosting, I think. She just hasn’t convinced me; I still want to eat at Noma. So see whether you feel the same. Or not. Whatever.
