What will be on our plates in the future? Will we soon be putting meat made from air on the barbecue? And will we be drinking potato milk with breakfast? Top chefs Dennis Huwaë and Marleen Brouwer take on the challenge in two teams in the new TV programme Restaurant van de toekomst, preparing the most popular dishes in the Netherlands with future-proof ingredients.

Dennis Huwäe is a familiar face to most foodies. He recently delighted us with his amazing street food dishes at his restaurant Daalder. Marleen Brouwer from Groningen may be less well known, and that is entirely undeserved. She is one of the two female chefs in the Netherlands with a Michelin star and specialises in patisserie.

In the programme, the two chefs work together with presenters Sosha Duysker and Anna Gimbrère; they search for future-proof ingredients for the star chefs to work with in the kitchen.

Who runs the best restaurant of the future?

Every week, they are tasked with preparing one of the Netherlands’ most widely eaten meals using sustainable alternatives. Who will make the tastiest ‘green’ hamburger or the most delicious innovative nasi? In the end, an expert jury decides which team takes home the win and who runs the restaurant of the future best.

Restaurant van de toekomst can be seen from Thursday 14 September on KRO-NCRV on NPO 3 at 20.55.
