Trend: Sunday Roast. You’re in good hands at these places in Amsterdam

sunday roast

Dad snores contentedly in front of a sports programme, Auntie giggles after a cheeky glass of sherry and the whole table is covered with plates and assorted glassware. This is more or less what a classic Sunday Roast in England looks like—a trend that is now slowly but surely sweeping across the Netherlands too.

Plenty of drinks

The traditional Sunday Roast revolves around huge cuts of meat and spending time with family. And if your family isn’t good company, there are always plenty of drinks. Originally, it was a lunch, but over the years it has shifted increasingly towards dinner, because afterwards you’re so pleasantly drowsy that all you want to do is crawl into bed, ready to start Monday feeling fresh.

Yorkshire pudding

Alongside a substantial piece of roasted meat, various kinds of vegetables, roast potatoes and deliciously rich gravy are served. And this typically British meal naturally also includes typically English dishes, such as Yorkshire pudding. And, as sustainable as the English are, the leftover meat is turned into a delicious Shepherd’s pie the next day.

Sunday Bruch: a good excuse

Here on the stable mainland, Sunday Roast has been fully embraced too. This is probably partly due to the growing number of Brits fleeing here, but also because more and more restaurants are discovering that events like these are a good excuse to go out for food and drinks with friends. Just as brunch has by now become well established. Here are three great examples:

Lazuur

Lazuur is a top spot for a Sunday Roast. Chef Sherif Khalil, known from Kaagman & Kortekaas, is the man who roasts the meat at this French-Portuguese restaurant in Amsterdam Noord on the first Sunday of every month. A classic three-course roast from 12:30 to 16:00; what a great Sunday!

MR PORTER

Floating above the city, overlooking the vibrant centre and in the heart of town, a hidden gem awaits you: the rooftop terrace of MR PORTER. While the city buzzes with energy below, you sip next-level cocktails and enjoy a Sunday Roast. The menu at MR PORTER at hotel W Amsterdam features dishes such as Rib of Beef and Pork Belly, but vegetarians haven’t been forgotten either: a vegetarian dish is served during the traditional Sunday Roast upon request.

Brasserie George

At the newest George, in the Houthavens district of Amsterdam, the traditional Sunday Roast can be ordered every Sunday. Expect a festive plate loaded with perfectly roasted meat, crispy potatoes, gravy and vegetables.
