You know the feeling: you’re craving something tasty, you innocently open the fridge door, and there goes your appetite. What a smell! Is it that opened bag of lettuce that has been sitting there just a little too long, or that piece of brie? The hummus or the leaking cucumber? With these tips (which we’ve tried out for you), your fridge will smell fresh and fruity again in no time.

A proper housekeeper never has to deal with a smelly mess in her fridge. But as chaotic as we are, we sometimes forget a bag here and a jar there. And of course, we know we should immediately start that big clean-up. Come on, put all the parts in the dishwasher and get it running. But for all those moments when you’re looking for a quick and effective (temporary solution), we’ve got you covered:

Baking Soda

In the category of household tricks: baking soda, also known as bicarbonate of soda. All you have to do is fill a bowl and place it somewhere at the back of the fridge, easy as that. Baking soda absorbs everything you’d rather not smell. Give the bowl a shake now and then, and this trick will work for about two weeks.

Coffee

Just as with gourmet smells, coffee is also a perfect solution for fridge smells. A bowl of ground coffee is all you need. This also neutralizes the smell—certainly for a few days.

Lemon

Option number three is lemon. Half a lemon already works wonders. It doesn’t matter where you put it, because this yellow, sour little powerhouse makes unpleasant smells disappear wherever it is. After just under a week, the lemon will have dried out and you can replace it if necessary.

The fridge egg

Besides these do it yourself options, there’s also the fridge egg. The gel in the egg creates a fresh smell and lasts for just under a month.
