Ultimate Hangover Brunch at Wyers

For everyone who’s had enough of açaí bowls, green smoothies and courgetti: at Wyers in Amsterdam, you can brunch or lunch on American comfort food. That means greasy, savory and exactly what you want when you have a hangover.

Now, I should say that I spent the evening before my visit to Wyers completely alcohol-free, but you can tempt me with a hearty lunch in any state. Especially one that’s as incredibly delicious as this.
Make one of these sauces with your next steak
Wyers is located in the Kimpton De Witt Hotel, right in the middle of Amsterdam’s Nieuwendijk. With a bit of luck, you’ll be seated facing the window and can enjoy watching tourists. Chef SammyD (number 86 in the FavorFlav Food Top 100) focuses on comfort food from The States, occasionally giving it a Dutch, French or British twist. What does that mean for the brunch dishes? Chicken wings with buffalo sauce, fish & chips and grilled onion soup with Dutch cheeses, for example.
Can’t choose
This makes choosing more than difficult. The lobster roll, eggs Benedict with pulled pork and brunch burger with egg and béarnaise sauce briefly cross our minds, but we end up going for the chicken & waffle and Cuban sandwich. To share, of course, because we want to try everything. As it should be, the Cuban sandwich is deliciously greasy. It can hardly be otherwise with roast pork, ham, cheese and a roll toasted in butter. Alongside all that fatty indulgence, a welcome little bowl of pickles and olives.
Chicken & waffle
These days, you increasingly see chicken & waffle on the menu at trendy lunch spots. The combination sounds too bizarre to be delicious. Only Americans could come up with serving fried chicken on a waffle with powdered sugar and maple syrup. But the sweet-and-savory combination works perfectly, and the hot sauce we get with it completes the dish. What a great dish.
These are our other favorite sweet-and-savory dishes
The fries in the middle of the table are crispy, and fortunately the portion isn’t too large. To top it all off, we order a fried dessert as well: beignets with lots of powdered sugar and a creamy vanilla sauce. Light and exactly as they’re supposed to be according to New Orleans tradition. We’re glad we share the portion, because two each is more than enough.
Keep drinking
For anyone who simply wants to drink away a possible hangover, there are plenty of international beers, cocktails and nice wines on the menu. And if you come on Sunday, you can listen to tunes by a real DJ while you eat. There’s also yogurt with granola on the menu for the fit girls and guys, but we recommend ignoring it and immersing yourself in the greasy American cuisine instead.
