Unique hospitality concept: Ichiran in New York

I’m often asked: “What are some truly cool hospitality concepts?” Here’s my answer! Every week, I take you to the most unique restaurants, bars and hotels at home and abroad. Today: Ichiran in New York, a place for anyone who wants to enjoy a meal on their own for a change!

In the Netherlands, you still don’t see it very often: dining out alone. Which is actually a shame. Solo dining is a wonderful way to unwind amid the hectic pace of everyday life. And to truly enjoy what’s on your plate. Another bonus: you can eat whatever you want, wherever and whenever you want. Without having to consult anyone.
New York
It’s a phenomenon they know all about in New York—there, solo dining is part of everyday life. So when you walk into a restaurant (or bar) in New York, you’ll always find parties of one.
Three locations
Smart entrepreneurs are responding to this trend. Ichiran, the ramen restaurant originally from Japan, has opened several locations in New York over the past three years: in Midtown, Brooklyn and, most recently, Times Square. How do you eat there? Although the photos already say a lot, here’s a brief explanation.

Booth for one
Guests take a seat in a special booth for one. The booths are separated from one another by a partition, so you’re truly alone. You order a drink and a dish using a form. Once you’ve filled it in, you press the button and the small shutter opens. An employee takes the form—without saying anything, in principle—and closes the shutter again. The orders are then served through the shutter as well. Enjoy your meal!

My experience
Last summer, I visited Ichiran in Times Square. It’s a fun experience to dine in peace right in the middle of Times Square. Enjoyable? Not necessarily, but that isn’t the aim here either. Functional? Absolutely, because the concept works like a well-oiled machine. And the dishes are incredibly flavorful. Don’t assume that everyone is back outside after just a few minutes. Guests really take their time over a meal. And for themselves!
