Verdejo is the ultimate wine for drinks and snacks (with giveaway!)

I don’t know about you, but as soon as the sun comes out, things literally and figuratively start bubbling here in the editorial office. And there’s one white wine we always have in the fridge: Rueda Verdejo. As far as we’re concerned, it’s the ideal wine for drinks and snacks. And good news: we’re giving away a few drinks-and-snacks packages so you can experience this for yourself.

Verdejo from Rueda
Verdejo – pronounced berdeggo – is the most important grape variety of the Spanish wine region of Rueda. Verdejo is to Spain what Pinot Grigio is to Italy: an incredibly popular white wine. Juicy, fruity and fresh, and bursting with refreshing grapefruit, sometimes combined with cheerful spring blossom and a tropical character. It’s a perfect wine for warm days and a real crowd-pleaser.
On less warm days, we enjoy it just as much, by the way. And also important: the excellent value for money. Rueda Verdejo always gives you great value
Typical bitter note
Do you like fresh white wine and enjoy drinking Sauvignon Blanc? Then Rueda Verdejo is a wonderful alternative. Less in your face aromatic and green-grassy than Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand often is, but with refreshing grapefruit and lemon. Besides its freshness, Verdejo from Rueda is characterised by a typical bitter note on the finish. And that combination is what makes it such an appealing wine. Especially on the terrace—or wherever else you’re enjoying drinks and snacks.
Then an uncomplicated thirst-quencher like this is delicious on its own, or with fish and salads. Exactly what we feel like when the weather is nice. And handy: you can recognise them by the green RUEDA label.

Versatile wine
The great thing is that with Verdejo—a late-ripening grape that is only picked once the skin turns brown—you can do much more than make a light, easy-drinking wine that is best consumed immediately after purchase. There are also producers who make complex versions from this Spanish grape. With some ageing in oak. This results in a somewhat more powerful and “thicker” wine. More smoky than fresh, but still with those lovely acids. Tip: serve it with something more substantial too, perhaps with a little cream.
