Vlammetjes Fans Take Note: You’ll Want to Try This

Do you love vlammetjes? You know, those crispy mini spring rolls with a creamy, spicy filling of seasoned minced meat and chili pepper? In other words: the kind of snack where you automatically pop a second one into your mouth too quickly and then tearfully reach for the mayo? Then we have news that will warm you up. Literally.

Johma has released a Vlam salad. Yep. Johma. Of the chicken curry, egg salad and that awkward moment when you’ve spooned the entire tub empty all by yourself. And now: Vlam salad. In collaboration with Topking, the brains behind the original Vlammetjes. The result? A spread with the iconic spicy flavor of vlammetjes, but for putting on your sandwich, baguette or cracker.
What exactly is Johma Vlam salad?
Johma’s Vlam salad is a mildly fiery combination of everything you love about a vlammetje: seasoned minced meat, spicy red pepper, bell pepper, mustard, garlic, and that typical ‘I-don’t-know-what-it-is-but-I’m-addicted’ flavor you also find in the snack.
Or as my colleague L. (also a huge Vlamtosti fan) put it: ‘This is an edible ode to the snack bar.’ A spreadable snack experience, in short. Perfect for lunch, your cracker on the drinks platter or that moment when you’re home alone and the kitchen suddenly gets very, very quiet…
How much does it cost?
At Albert Heijn, you pay €3.29 for a tub of Johma Vlam salad (150 grams). That’s enough to top around 10 sandwiches. Unless, like the aforementioned L., you think a generous layer still isn’t enough. In that case: 6 to 7 well-filled slices of happiness.
Taste test: is it really that good?
Honestly? Yes. This Vlam salad is deliciously creamy, pleasantly spicy, and has exactly that rich, seasoned, salty flavor balance that makes your inner snack monster perk up. Perfect with white bread, baguette, crackers, or simply by the spoonful straight from the tub when there are no people around to mercilessly roast you for such vulgar behavior.
Is it healthy? (Is this even a question?)
That depends on how you define health. This is, of course, just junk food. Let’s not beat around the bush. Delicious junk food, admittedly. But honestly: if you read the ingredients list, you’ll probably put the lid back on the tub in shock. It contains everything from minced pork, rapeseed oil, mushroom powder and xanthan gum to preservatives and a handful of E-numbers.
Sadly, a salad that tastes like a deep-fried snack can never be a superfood. If it were, the world would be perfect, right?
Where to buy Johma Vlam salad
You’ll find it in the supermarket, yes, in the section with all the other Johma salads. I’m always amazed by how many there are by now. I’m still missing a bitterballen salad, though. (Johma, are you listening?)
