Wagyu Burger Rossini Style with foie gras and black truffle at the new Jondani restaurant in Amsterdam

The new Jondani restaurant has opened on Beethovenstraat in Amsterdam. And word is already spreading nicely: this is a place you’ll want to visit. So we did—and it was delicious. In a building that stood empty for years, you now imagine yourself in Paris. Plush carpeting, lots of mirrors, beautiful tableware, great music, wonderfully attentive service and dishes that are finger-licking good.

An ode to family
Let’s start with that special name. Jondani is the result of the special bond between the owners, hospitality brothers Mickey and Yoeri de Jong. Jondani is not their first business; they already have considerable experience with restaurants The Fish Club in Kijkduin, Café in the City in Amsterdam and The Oyster Club in Rotterdam. They combined the names of their sons, Johnny and Dani, to create the name Jondani for their new venture. Downstairs by the toilets, a plaque proudly displays the namesakes. The brothers emphasize that Jondani is more than just a name; it is an ode to family. And that’s not all: with Jondani, they want to offer a place where you can not only eat exceptionally well, but also go with your family, friends or loved one. And judging by the clientele, they have pulled it off beautifully.
Decadent design
Jondani’s interior has not been skimped on. In the first part of the restaurant, you can eat at the high tables, in the middle at the long bar and in the back at the round leather banquettes or regular tables. If the restaurant exudes anything, it is contemporary luxury and refinement. Mirrors enlarge the space and add a dynamic element of light and reflection. The low bar creates a relaxed atmosphere. Jondani is exactly the kind of place where you go for lunch in the afternoon and don’t make your way home arm in arm until around midnight. With a bit of luck, with your own partner.

French-style cooking
Well, literally speaking. Because nothing is rushed here; everything is presented with great attention to detail. The cuisine is international with French influences. Executive chef Michael Verboom has created a menu centered on pure flavors and high-quality ingredients. That may sound like the umpteenth piece of marketing talk, but it certainly isn’t. When you cook with genuinely good products, you don’t need much embellishment—and they understand that here. For example, the carpaccio isn’t abused here, but made from beautifully tender meat (Tenderloin), without unnecessary fuss.

Delicious Black Cod
The Black Cod, marinated in miso for 48 hours, is incredibly delicious, as is the generous Tuna Tartare with avocado. And if you really want to indulge, feast on a mountain of oysters or blini with caviar. The Wagyu Burger Rossini Style with foie gras and black truffle is decadently delicious too. Meat lovers can also choose from a tender Sirloin Steak, Tenderloine and Ribeye. Everything is served on beautiful plates with blue rims and the name Jondani on them.

Great side dishes
And then there are the incredibly delicious side dishes: crisp haricots verts with butter and tiny shallots, beautifully thinly sliced avocado with olive oil and salt, mashed potatoes with black truffle, and perfect French fries with wonderfully tangy mayonnaise. We are not exaggerating when we say that everything coming out of the kitchen hits exactly the right note. The dishes are pure and simply incredibly tasty. The chef never goes off the rails, but nothing is boring either. The sommelier has put together a wine list that includes both approachable bottles and exclusive discoveries.
