Walk this way when these special shoes come out
Many people who eat plant-based (whether occasionally or full-time) also try to make conscious, sustainable choices in other areas. Sometimes supermarket products can suddenly surprise you by turning out to be vegan, and sometimes you might consciously look for lifestyle alternatives that can be just as good without animals. The iconic Adidas sneakers, for example, will soon be released in a very special edition…
Because Adidas, which last year introduced fully vegan versions of some of its best-known sneakers, is taking things up another notch with these shoes. The first models made without leather were produced from recycled polyester and other plastics. It’s already very good that they could be made without animals, but of course all that plastic also accumulates on the planet. That’s why the next step was developing a biodegradable shoe made from: mushrooms!
Shroom shoes
Yes, forget that slice of crispy toast with spicy, perfectly crisp-fried mushrooms and champignons for a moment. And actually, ‘mushrooms’ doesn’t quite cover it, because the intended material is made from mycelium; the underground network of fungal threads belonging to mushrooms. In collaboration with the clever minds at biotech company Bolt Threads, a mushroom leather is being developed for the shoes, which will be called Mylo™—and which you’ll soon be able to walk around in.
A smaller sneaker footprint
Adidas has ambitious plans to reduce its ecological footprint, and this biodegradable sneaker is part of them. It’s not yet known exactly when they will come onto the market (and the photos are not guaranteed to show the models in development), but whether in the pan or on your feet: we’re pro-mushroom!
