Warning! These Airfryer brands are listening in on your conversations
Be careful what you say near your Airfryer. It could well be that your beloved appliance is listening in… Can’t we even bake bitterballen, fries and sausage rolls in complete privacy anymore?!
People have been secretive about our privacy and appliances for some time now. We’ve long considered our phones untrustworthy when it comes to this. Because isn’t it very strange that you suddenly get bombarded with ads about Airfryers, precisely after you’ve just spoken to a colleague about Airfryers? At least we thought we were still safe with our Airfryer. But no, now you have to watch what you say around that too.
These Airfryers record your conversations
This is according to research by the British consumer watchdog Which?. The organisation discovered that the Xiaomi Mi Smart, the Aigostar and the Cosori CAF-LI401S, Airfryers from the Chinese market, may listen in on and record conversations. These are so-called smart Airfryers that you operate with your smartphone. During installation of the app, consumers have to give permission for various things. The most striking one: permission to record audio from your phone. And if you thought: don’t they do that for voice control of the appliance? Nope, because the Xiaomi Mi Smart doesn’t even have that function.
Your Airfryer knows where you are…
Also striking: Which? discovered that the Xiaomi Airfryer app uses trackers for, among others, Facebook. Xiaomi and Aigostar also both sent personal data to Chinese servers. What kind of data? Well, for example, Aigostar asks consumers to send their date of birth and gender. All three Airfryers were also very interested in your exact location. Why the company needs that to make Airfryers, goodness knows.

Sidenote: Xiaomi and Aigostar both included the notice that they send personal data to Chinese servers in their privacy statements. But then again, the first person who reads one thoroughly from A to Z has yet to be born, in my opinion. In any case, it’s a clear warning—even though Xiaomi, for example, states ”that permission to record audio in the Xiaomi app does not apply to the Airfryers” and Cosori says it ”prioritises privacy” (Het Nieuwsblad). So double-check whether you have an Airfryer from one of these brands!
