Doing the grocery shopping at home: nothing special. But abroad, at least one supermarket visit is planned in the hunt for edible souvenirs to take home. From Portugal, those are of course sardines. Lisbon is even called the sardine city, with modern and traditional shops full of decorated tins. But even the smallest supermarket has a large selection at low prices. Stock up!

Canned sardines

Canned sardines generally come from the cold Atlantic Ocean, just off the coast of Portugal. Once the season gets going in summer, fishermen catch thousands of them at a time. Once off the boat, the sardines are cleaned by hand and packed into tins within a few hours. Because the packing happens so quickly, nothing changes about the sardine’s flavor. No, not even if you’ve had the tin sitting in the pantry for an endless amount of time.

Make sure you always have a few tins in the cupboard, and you’ll always have a killer snack to serve with drinks at home. Delicious with a glass of rosé!

Websites full of tins

Fortunately, you can also buy canned sardines in the Netherlands, for example on this website full of tins, and you’ll also find beautiful canned food here. Eat them as they are, or use them to make this snack to serve with drinks. Incredibly simple, with a 100% success guarantee!

How to make Sardine Luzienne, a snack to serve with drinks

  • Moisten the rice paper sheets and place them on a towel; take a round rice paper sheet and soak it for approx. 1 minute in lukewarm water until the sheet is soft. Always soak one rice paper sheet at a time.
  • Put the contents of the tins in a bowl and loosen with a fork.
  • Coarsely chop the fresh basil.
  • Top the rice paper sheets with the fish and basil, reserving some for decoration.
  • Fold into small spring rolls; fold the sides inward and then roll the spring roll up tightly.
  • Place a basil leaf on top, pour yourself a glass of rosé… and enjoy!
