Sergio Herman has exciting new culinary plans

Sergio Herman, the chef with no fewer than six Michelin stars (!) to his name, has plans for a new ‘venture’. In Terhofstede, a hamlet in the border municipality of Retranchement, he wants to create a culinary meeting place.

According to the zoning plans, the intention is to convert an old farm shed into a home. There will also be a reception area and a show garden. In the newly built shed, ‘The Barn’, the star chef wants to develop food concepts.
Not a restaurant
There should also be a space where he can philosophise about food and art with other chefs and artists, and Herman wants to train young chefs there. Offices and a maximum of three bedrooms for staff are also planned. The Barn will not be a restaurant. ‘The culinary experience is reserved for guests of the top chef himself or one of his fellow chefs. The concept is based on the principle of invitation,’ states the zoning plan, which mentions a maximum of twenty covers for lunch and dinner. Guests would be welcome for around ten days per month.
Another star?
Whatever kind of venture it becomes, it can hardly be anything other than an unprecedented culinary success. Because everything Sergio stirs with his whisk seems to turn to gold. His newest restaurant in Antwerp, Le Pristine, recently received a star. The Jane, his other restaurant in Antwerp, has two. His chic beach restaurant Pure C, in Cadzand-Bad, also has two stars, while AIR Republic in Cadzand has one. And his ‘snack bars’ are also a huge success (those loaded fries, phenomenal!)
Cooking makes you happy
At the beginning of 2019, Sergio Herman had already told hospitality trade magazine Misset Horeca about his plans. “At the end of 2020 or beginning of 2021, I want my own place again, near Cadzand, where I can cook myself. It will be for a very small, highly selective group of people. Ultimately, I’m happiest when I cook,” he said at the time. With the zoning plan for The Barn, his plans are getting ever closer to becoming reality.
