This Dessert Restaurant Has a Michelin Star

Wow: at the über-hip CODA* in Berlin, dinner (seven courses!) consists solely of desserts with matching drinks. It’s even so good that the exceptional dessert restaurant was awarded a Michelin star last year. A must-go for true sweet tooths!

CODA is not exactly a normal restaurant: the only choice is the tasting menu of seven courses consisting exclusively of desserts and matching drinks. Okay, it costs a bit (138 euros), but you do get a culinary experience you won’t soon forget. The chefs don’t serve ordinary dame blanche or crème brûlée (also very delicious, by the way), but refined, unique creations with surprising and experimental flavor explosions.

No sugar!
Sounds good, but I hear you thinking: um, seven courses of desserts—how much sugar will I be consuming?! Don’t panic! Chef René Frank uses no added sugar, only products that are naturally sweet. Think beetroot, carrot, and fruit. Natural desserts, in other words. Savory elements are also added to every dish for the right balance. Besides a ‘regular’ dessert dinner, after 10 p.m. you can also choose a late night three- or four-course dinner.

Exceptional drinks
Another special touch: the chef offers several options for a suitable drink pairing with each dessert. For example, his dish featuring figs and hazelnuts pairs beautifully with sake (!) or port, while the dish with cacao, artichoke, and tomato comes with Lambrusco.

Pastry Chef of the Year
Frank, named Pastry Chef of the Year in 2013 by culinary restaurant guide Gault&Millau, and concept developer Oliver Bischoff opened CODA* in 2016 in the up-and-coming Berlin neighborhood of Neukölln. With success: last year, the restaurant received a Michelin star, and in 2016 it was named the best gastronomy concept at a German awards show.
