What top beer sommeliers prefer to drink with their favorite fried snack

Becoming a wine sommelier has been possible for years. Beer sommeliers, on the other hand, are a much more recent phenomenon. By now, our country has more than 200 beer sommeliers, and with more than 600 breweries, this centuries-old drink is more popular than ever. We asked a number of top beer sommeliers which beer goes best with their favorite snack.

Beer with a greasy snack; it’s my favorite café ritual and I miss it terribly. But now that I can’t go to my local pub, I’m making the best of the situation and brushing up on my beer-and-snack knowledge. Because which beer actually goes best with which snack? To learn from the real experts, I asked beer sommeliers which beer they drink with their favorite fried snack.
Arvid Bergström, beer sommelier, author and owner of Proef Bier
“I love draadjesvleeskroket, the Burgundian version of a beef croquette. With it: a 7.5% Dubbel. With a beef croquette, I prefer to drink a Tripel.”
Bas Schampers, beer sommelier and creator of the Burgundian Beer Cellar
”I teach at StiBON’s beer sommelier training course. We always discuss flavor combinations here. The only combination I always approve of is bitterballen, with every beer ;)”
Monique Biben, beer sommelier
“I don’t have a favorite fried snack, but a Mooie Nel from Jopen is always good. With any snack.”
Richard Moerkerk, beer sommelier at Proeflokaal de Boom and owner of De BierBasiliek
“My favorite fried snack is without a doubt the shrimp croquette. Preferably one with a runny filling. Add a crisp saison and I’m intensely happy.”
Kim Sonneveld, beer sommelier and owner of Plan B
“Crispy fried shrimp with a (Grutte Pier) Tripel! Another top combination is a Burgundian bitterbal with a Jopen Koyt or a dubbel from Brouwerij Noordt. And with a cheese stick, I prefer to drink a Zundert 8.”
