On 15 March, the entire Dutch hospitality industry was told to close its doors for the time being. Still, sitting around is not an option for many, and one initiative after another is emerging to help not only themselves, but others too.
Throwing food away is a waste
Quarrelling people and empty shelves in the supermarket: the Dutch panic-buying spree caused quite a few problems, including for food banks. The hysterical stockpiling of food and drinks resulted in major shortages throughout the country. Fortunately, the hospitality industry came to the rescue. The mandatory closure left many restaurants with unexpectedly large stocks. Refrigerators and shelves were emptied and donated en masse to food banks. Nursing homes and hospitals were also made very happy with plenty of food.

Hotel as emergency hospital
Besides restaurants, hotels will also have to struggle to survive in the coming period. Although hotels are still offering overnight stays, many are completely empty due to mass cancellations. This is also the case with the two hotels owned by hotel proprietor Lammert de Vries. He decided to offer help and is making his hotels available as emergency hospitals. “The rooms may not be furnished as a hospital, but should a shortage arise, there will at least be beds,” says Lammert.
Groceries delivered to your home
The recently reopened Amarone* in Rotterdam also knows how to take action. The Michelin-starred restaurant has announced that it will provide groceries on request, plus a delivery service in collaboration with its suppliers. And, well, no idea how to fillet a fish or pre-cook meat? No problemo! The Amarone team is ready to help with that too.

Carnival-goers, donate!
Less than a month ago, the cafés in the south of the country that are now closed were still packed with Carnival-goers. To help the owners a little, a call has been made on Facebook to donate leftover Carnival vouchers or tokens to your favorite café. Many of the tokens are no longer valid after this weekend, and you have already bought them anyway. You might as well donate them, right?
