Amarone in Rotterdam is reopening half a year after the fire. With a new interior and new wine, because the fire that broke out in the restaurant’s cellar during the summer holidays caused extensive damage.

Amarone has held a Michelin star since 2007. Jan van Dobben has been the restaurant’s chef for the past year and a half. His style is classic French, with a Japanese twist. Jan and his wife Yoshiko draw inspiration for this from their annual trips to Japan.

New wines

The entire wine collection had to be written off; it was unusable due to smoke damage. Yoshiki, together with maître-sommelier Jasper Verhagen, has put together a completely new wine list.

Stars not burned

Fortunately, the fire and Amarone’s temporary closure had no consequences for its ratings in restaurant guides. The Michelin star remained, Amarone is ranked 60th in Lekker and received 15/20 in Gault & Millau, which also named Yoshiko Sommelier of the Year 2020.

Going all out on the interior

Jan and Yoshiko went all out on the new interior. ‘We designed most of it ourselves,’ Jan writes in a press release. ‘Eye-catchers include the white three-dimensional wall around the open kitchen, the Japan-inspired photographic artwork (…) and the lamps above the bar in the shape of origami birds.’
