Michelin stars 2020: these are all the winners and losers

Nail-biting and gnashing of teeth for the Dutch culinary world today! Because the annual Michelin stars have been awarded once again. Who received one or even several stars? And who lost the status Michelin bestows on the top of the restaurant world? We’ve listed it all for you.

The 2019 guide features three three-star restaurants, eighteen establishments with two stars and 89 restaurants with one star. But Jacob Jan Boerma of De Leest—together with Inter Scaldes and De Librije, a three-star restaurant—is out anyway, because shortly after Christmas Jacob Jan pulled the plug on his establishment. News: the former three-star chef is opening a ‘high-end’ pizza place in Amsterdam this year.
Tribute
A beautiful and moving moment during the ceremony: the first Michelin Guide was received by the wife of former star chef Lucas Rive. A tribute to the chef who passed away last December after a short illness.
Award for best sommelier
Before the chef awards, the spotlight was turned on the country’s best sommelier. Michelin’s Sommelier Award went to Koen van der Plas of Kasteel Heemstede.
Most talented young chef
New this year is the Young Chef Award. It went to 23-year-old Cas Pikaar of restaurant Doyy in Eindhoven.
Top contenders
As always, rumors about the top contenders had been circulating for months. The names mentioned most often among chefs were Daalder in Amsterdam, where Dennis Huwaë has been doing incredible things for several years, and Thijs Meliefste of Meliefste in Wolphaartsdijk. The biggest surprise: neither restaurant received a star.
Eight new one-star restaurants
Those who want to dine at one of the new starred establishments will have to travel south, as that is where most of the newcomers appeared. The winners are: Graphite by Peter Gast (Amsterdam), Zout & citroen (Oosterhout), Noble Kitchen by Edwin Kats (Cromvoirt), Rantrée (Maastricht), Beluga loves you (Maastricht), Versaen (Ravenstein), Marrees (Weert) and Eden (Valkenswaard).

Three stars
De Librije in Zwolle retains its three stars. Top-level culinary performance has been delivered here since 2004. “And we still enjoy it,” an enthusiastic Thérèse Boer said at the ceremony. And hooray! Inter Scaldes, run by Jannis and Claudia Brevet, is also retaining its three stars.
No new two-star or three-star restaurants were added this year.
Losers
The restaurants that lost their star(s) are: De Leest (Vaessen, ***), Beluga (Maastricht, **), Blok’s (Amersfoort, *), Bridges Dining (Amsterdam, *), La Trinité (Sluis, *) and Strandlodge (Winterswijk, *).
