Where to Eat the Very Best Wiener Schnitzels

wienerschnitzel

You can eat them everywhere in Vienna: traditional Wiener schnitzels. But even in the city of the famous breaded cutlet, there are degrees ranging from okay to heavenly delicious. Add the gemütliche atmosphere and you have my favorite places for the ultimate Wiener schnitzel feeling.

More Viennese Than Vienna

Dark red slats on the walls, brown chairs and tables, and traditionally dressed waiters: Gasthaus Wild comes straight from the 1970s. The gigantic bar that remains from the days when GastHaus Wild was still a wine house is the showstopper of this quintessential Viennese restaurant. And then there’s the schnitzel: it comes with pork or veal (the choice is yours), coated in a crispy layer and served with a wedge of lemon. Still in the mood for something else but not exactly a linguist? Ask for an explanation of the dishes, so you don’t end up surprised by a little pan of meat leftovers (I speak from experience..)

MacBook Pro-Sized

Gmoa Keller is also a quintessential traditional Viennese restaurant, but just a little more elegant (tables covered with white linen, napkins folded into points). The Wiener schnitzels here are served with a classic Erdapfelsalat (potato salad). Go ahead and loosen your belt a notch, because the schnitzels are MacBook Pro-sized. You’ll want to drink the Austrian red wine made from the Blauer Zweigelt grape from Burgenland with it. And a special mention for the continuous refilling of the pretzel bread basket. Reservations are essential, because the Viennese themselves also love coming here.

Chicken Schnitzel

With seven different beers on tap, Birometer 2 is a truly Viennese beer café. You can sit inside or outside and choose from three varieties: chicken, pork and veal. The best? The chicken version. For those who have seen their last schnitzel in Vienna: the bratwursts are divine here too. A juicy mix of pork and veal. Save room for the apple strudel! It may not all be healthy, but hey, you’re on vacation.
