Why not: sleeping in a potato

Potatoes come in all shapes and sizes: baked, as fries, mashed or as a hotel. Say what? Yes, you read that right: you can now sleep in a gigantic potato.

Well, it’s not actually a real potato, of course. The 8.5-metre-long, 3.6-metre-wide and 3.5-metre-high potato is made of steel, plaster and concrete. Not for eating, then, but absolutely perfect for sleeping in.

After serving as a kind of travelling advertising column for the Idaho Potato Commission, a government organisation that promotes the state’s famous potatoes, the giant potato is now permanently parked in a large field near the small town of Boise in the American state of Idaho. Its proud owner is Kristie Wolfe, who, alongside being a spokesperson for the Idaho Potato Commission, is now also the potato’s Airbnb host.

And don’t judge the spud by its looks: from the outside, this hollow potato may look uninviting, drab and rugged, but inside Kristie has transformed it into a small, cute house with pink furniture. Together with a luxurious bathroom located in a silo outside the potato, it’s a kind of glamping 2.0. A refreshing change from a yurt or tipi.

It doesn’t come cheap: for around €200 per night, you can sleep here and dream of a delicious baked potato. Big Idaho Potato Hotel is listed on Airbnb, and there’s still plenty of availability later this year. I’d say, seize the opportunity.
