Why you wake up hungry

ontbijt op bed

No matter how much you ate the night before, you wake up in the morning with a rumbling stomach and can think of nothing but food. Sound familiar? This could be why.

You eat too much before going to bed

You went out for dinner the night before and were so full that you thought you would never want to eat again, but the next morning you’re hungrier than ever. How is that possible? If you eat a lot of sugars and carbohydrates just before going to bed, your body produces extra insulin. This causes your blood sugar level to drop about an hour after you’ve eaten, which leads to this hungry feeling.

You skip meals

Are you so busy during the day that you sometimes forget to eat? I can hardly imagine it, but it can happen. If you don’t consume enough calories, your hunger can become so intense that your body wakes you up at night to eat. So make sure you eat at least three meals a day.

You don’t drink enough water

Are you managing to drink those two liters a day? If you really don’t drink enough, your body can mistake a lack of water for hunger, leaving you feeling hungry. Do you know you don’t drink enough? Then put a glass of water next to your bed, so you can take a sip to see whether you’re actually thirsty.

You sleep poorly

As if sleeping badly weren’t bad enough already, it can also affect your appetite. The hormones ghrelin and leptin stimulate and suppress appetite, respectively. Sleep deprivation causes ghrelin levels to rise while leptin levels decrease, making you feel hungry. Try to get enough sleep. Read a book in bed instead of watching a series, and put your phone on airplane mode.
