Will meat adverts soon be banned too?
I have to say, I have quite an opinion on this too, and at first I thought this was an article from De Speld. But no, it’s really true: within the municipal boundaries of Haarlem, you will no longer see any meat adverts. None. This is an initiative by Ziggy Klazes of GroenLinks.
She was already working on a motion to ban adverts for fuels, but decided to extend it to the meat industry: ‘On the one hand, you earn money from this kind of advertising, while on the other hand you believe that we should do whatever we can to combat global warming.’
How patronising can it get?
I completely understand that adverts for cigarettes are no longer allowed. But meat?! Come on, seriously, will that soon also become a cordoned-off section in the supermarket, so that not everyone is exposed to it? Klazes believes that ‘bad meat contributes to global warming’. Okay, but what about the ‘good’ meat? Because this decision disadvantages that too.
According to Klazes, that is a matter of implementation, and it is the responsibility of the executive board. But I also wonder: how are you going to handle products that contain meat as well? Take my beloved Maccie: there is meat in a Big Mac. Will they no longer be allowed to advertise in Haarlem either? Or will the burgers be blurred because of their offensive content?
Haarlem has a world first
So in Haarlem, you will no longer find an advert for a delicious steak anywhere — at least not in public spaces. And of course, that generates the necessary publicity, such as in The Guardian: ‘Dutch city becomes world’s first to ban meat adverts in public’. And the reactions are far from mild: few people seem to understand this decision. And rightly so, in my opinion. Completely exaggerated and nonsensical: as if you are going to stop buying meat just because you no longer see it in adverts.
And on top of that, this also affects smaller businesses, such as butchers (with ‘good’ meat), who are now no longer allowed to put a sign outside. Klazes, have you really thought this through?
