The health benefits of onions

uien

I think this is really great news, because I love onions. Seriously, wake me up in the middle of the night for onion soup and I’ll be absolutely delighted. So it works out well, because onions are very good for our health.

Now I’m wondering whether the tiny bit of chopped onion on your fries with satay sauce counts too, but either way: onions are healthy. Curious what they do to your body? Here goes.

1. They’re packed with antioxidants
And those make free radicals disappear: in the long term, antioxidants help prevent diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease.

2. They keep your blood sugar levels stable
Especially if you have diabetes, it’s therefore very sensible to eat plenty of onions. This is thanks to the flavonoids in onions: they keep your blood sugar levels stable.

4. They’re full of beneficial nutrients
Onions are packed with vitamins and nutrients. They’re highly nutritious because they contain few calories but are high in vitamins and minerals. On top of that, onions also contain lots of fiber, so they’re good for your gut too.

5. They’re good for your heart
They keep your cholesterol levels in check and, as a result, your blood pressure too, reducing your risk of heart disease. I already mentioned this briefly in point number one, of course, but your heart is so important that I wanted to emphasize it once more.
