“Will you eat more snakes?” says Florida

slangenvlees

This really is nightmare material. Now, I’m not exactly a daredevil when it comes to, uh, eating unusual things. Fried insects in Asia? I passed. Organ meat in France? Non, merci. But even if you are an adventurous eater: would you eat this? The state of Florida is calling on its residents to eat more snakes. Yes, you read that right: SNAKES.

I’ve never seen this on a menu myself—and I’ve actually never thought about whether it’s genuinely edible. According to the Mashed website, dictator Kim Jong Un apparently likes them, at least when it comes to drinking snakes… In his wine glass. Horrifying.

The reason: obvious

But why the residents of Florida should be devouring snakes en masse is probably exactly the reason you’re thinking of: there’s a snake surplus. The number of snakes (pythons, no less!) is so problematic that urgent action is needed.

Bon appétit!

So they might as well end up on our plates. And they know how to market it, too: snake meat is supposedly packed with protein and also very low in calories. Convinced yet? It apparently tastes like chicken—and chicken has more calories. No, it definitely doesn’t taste like fish, according to a snake catcher. Just make sure you prepare it properly; otherwise, it’s mostly very rubbery.

This snake catcher, named Donna Kalil, recommends preparing the snake meat with onion and garlic in a pressure cooker, and then adding it to spaghetti sauce. Spaghetti à la python—sounds delicious? Well, bon appétit, then.
