Wine & food bar: Thirty5ive in Amsterdam

At Thirty5ive on Amsterdam’s Javaplein, the dishes are created around the wines rather than the other way around. Get ready for the best combinations in a menu full of comfort food. 

You can go all out with a chef’s menu here, order individual dishes or simply come by for a really good glass of wine. FavorFlavs Emma tried smoked cod with liquorice miso, leek chips and a 64-degree egg. A wonderful start. Then comes crispy pork belly with kimchi purée and honey. The kimchi is made from onion and has a less intense flavour than the version you get at a Korean restaurant. The acidity of the kimchi combines perfectly with the fatty pork belly. The menu changes often, so when you visit you can probably choose from different—certainly just as delicious—dishes.

Comfort food

Both dishes are beautifully presented but taste like pure comfort food; crispy, roasted and served with something creamy. The portions are generous for the price. Both dishes cost around ten euros, and together with the incredibly tasty bread that is served, two portions are exactly enough. For dessert, we share a chocolate fondant with hazelnut ice cream, salted caramel and blackberry.

Full of surprises
The wine list is full of surprises. As an aperitif, we drink a vin nature prosecco. The owner is Moroccan, and this comes through in the wine selection. The Chardonnay from Morocco is so delicious that I don’t want to drink anything else afterwards and immediately order a case to be delivered home (you can simply order it online). For a change, we have another glass with dessert: the CB signature rouge, which has just come in. A perfect pairing and a great way to end the evening.

The only shame is that they are not open during the day; I would love to settle in here at two o’clock in the afternoon and work my way through the entire menu. Because of the cosy sofa and the subdued lighting, I hereby declare it the ideal place for a date. But it is actually suitable for any occasion.
