World Sushi Day

We will never get enough of sushi. Nigiri, maki or even sushi donuts—we love them all. So we’ve marked Sunday, June 18 in our calendars, because that’s World Sushi Day.

This ‘holiday’ originated in the US in 2009. Yes, really—the crazy Westerners came up with it, not the Japanese themselves. The day was created to give this iconic Japanese dish more attention. FavorFlav gives you five tips on how to celebrate June 18 in style.

Japanese Watergarden
Start the day in a Japanese garden. Of course, you don’t have to spend the entire day simply stuffing yourself with sushi. At the Japanese Watergarden in Naaldwijk, you can relax among Japanese flowers, bonsai trees and bamboo.

Dining out
The very best way to celebrate this day is, of course, simply to go out for sushi. Our tip: Momo in Amsterdam. The crispy soft shell crab roll is highly recommended. At Momo, you eat your sushi with real wasabi, rather than the green paste you often get at other restaurants. We’d run to Hobbemastraat for that alone.

Sushi feast

Really don’t feel like spending the whole day out? Invite your friends over for a sushi dinner. All you need to do beforehand is cook the rice, lay out sheets of nori, and cut your fish and vegetables into equal slices. Let your guests do the rolling themselves. Just make sure everyone has their own mat to get started. Do send around this video, so your friends know what to expect.

Clothing
Want to celebrate this day completely in style? You can always buy clothing that fits the theme. On Etsy, you’ll find everything from printed shirts to crazy socks. We’re not entirely sure what to make of it, but you’ll definitely leave an impression.

Festival

Is one day not enough? You can also get tickets for the Sushi Festival in Rotterdam. The schedule hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s sure to be just as successful as last year. So keep September 9 and 10 free in your calendar.
