Wow: this is how unhealthy water with powder or syrup really is

It has been a trend on TikTok lately: instead of a ‘What I eat in a day‘, a ‘What I drink in a day‘. The emphasis here is on drinking enough water — which is positive in itself, because I think (and judging by the comments on TikTok) that many people actually drink far too little water. It’s always useful when tips are shared for that.

However, not all tips ultimately turn out to be equally healthy; for example, it is often shown that powders or syrups are added to water to make it more appealing to drink plenty of it.
Healthier than soft drinks
According to Helen Schroé, dietitian and researcher at the University of Ghent, it is healthier than soft drinks — but that really says it all. She is particularly critical of the syrups: ‘If you add two ‘pumps’ of that syrup to a litre of water, you consume approximately 22 grams of sugar, which is equivalent to five sugar cubes.’
‘Adding such a syrup is therefore not a good choice if you want to make it easier to drink your water. It is still healthier than soft drinks, though: if you compare it with a glass of cola, which contains an average of seven sugar cubes. Per litre, that amounts to 26 cubes: five times as many as in such a WaterTok syrup.’
The powders are also best avoided
These powders may not contain as much sugar, but they do contain large amounts of aspartame (which is also found in diet soft drinks). These sweeteners are certainly not recommended for children, because it increases the likelihood that they will still crave them intensely when they are adults. In addition, some powders also contain caffeine, which is of course not entirely ideal either.
It is still a shame that a trend that should essentially promote health seems to be trying to do the opposite. It just goes to show; always keep thinking critically.
