WTF: all of Spain is up in arms over packaged pre-fried eggs in the supermarket
For Spaniards who still can’t fry an egg, Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona has good news: its stores have recently started selling packaged pre-fried eggs. Thirty seconds in the microwave and you have 2 perfectly fried eggs in front of you, complete with a runny yolk and crispy edge. But instead of welcoming the product as a gift from heaven, Spaniards actually find the ready-made fried eggs ridiculous. Honestly? We can understand that.
The supermarket charges no less than €1.80 for 2 such pre-fried eggs (packaged in thick plastic!). For comparison: half a dozen fresh eggs cost a whole lot less in the same store. Moreover, Spaniards see absolutely no fit with their supermarket culture, which is known precisely for its wide range of fresh products. Just think of the enormous fresh produce and fish sections where, every holiday, we walk around with our mouths open and eyes wide.
Inventor: frying eggs is no longer a piece of cake
All in all, we can understand why these packaged pre-fried eggs are a hot topic on Spanish radio, television and social media (TikTok is going wild!). Who doesn’t understand the fuss? Inventor Javier Yzuel. According to him, the product actually responds perfectly to our needs. Apparently, we no longer have any time to pour oil into the pan, let the pan heat up, crack the egg and then fry it.
Moreover, Yzuel says, splashes, stains and minor burns—caused by the scorching-hot oil in which the eggs are fried—are now a thing of the past. Fine and all, but we’d still rather fry our egg ourselves. We’ll make time and accept the risk of splashes and stains. If we keep these 11 common mistakes when preparing eggs in mind, we’re sure it’ll turn out just fine.

A success after all?
Whether the pre-fried eggs will still become a success once the Spaniards have cooled down a little remains to be seen. If we look at the product’s history, it certainly doesn’t promise much for the future. In 2016, Burger King used the pre-fried eggs (in frozen form) on its hamburgers, but it didn’t catch on at all. The result: the company founded by the inventor of the pre-fried eggs went bankrupt. Ouch.
