Yes, really: here’s why you should occasionally put a clove of garlic in your toilet

Knoflook wc

It’s not exactly a room known as a fresh and fruity little space: the toilet. Still, there’s a very simple trick to keep the recipient of small and large deposits as clean as possible. What do you need? A clove of garlic. Really.

Yes, I know your bulb of garlic is probably far from the cleaning cupboard. Understandably so, because you generally only use garlic for cooking. And although there really are things you shouldn’t do with garlic, it’s actually a very good idea to drop a peeled clove into the toilet.

Bacteria and fungi

The reason is actually super simple. Garlic has a whole lot of very good properties, which also make it an excellent household remedy. It contains allicin: the compound that causes the pungent garlic smell. But this compound also ensures that bacteria and fungi don’t stand a chance. And which place is teeming with bacteria and fungi? That’s right, your old, familiar toilet bowl.

A clove of garlic, a clean bowl

It makes sense that lots of unwanted, nasty little friends gather there. The toilet is simply a very damp place. Just like the bathroom, incidentally. But a clove of garlic in the toilet—I imagine it would work in the shower or sink too!—can therefore help. Such a clove has a highly anti-inflammatory and disinfecting effect, so why not give it a try? Do peel it beforehand, otherwise the active compounds can’t be released properly. One night in the bowl should be enough. Don’t forget to flush in the morning—but secretly I was already hoping you normally do that anyway when you leave a yellow or brown surprise behind.
