You can now buy chimichurri chips at Lidl, and this is what we think of them

Chimichurri chips Lidl

Last week, we already picked up a box of cereal churros at Lidl supermarket. After all, it’s South American weeks again. That means that, besides the divine mini snacks for breakfast, there are plenty of other delicious things available too. Do the chimichurri chips count?

Chimichurri is made with fresh green herbs, plenty of olive oil, lemon juice and a red chilli pepper. It’s often served with a perfectly cooked steak. But what do chips with exactly the same flavour taste like? Naturally, we brought home a bag, which was immediately opened for a proper chip taste test. Is it worth picking up a bag for €1.39, or are you better off leaving it on the shelf?

Points for the ridges

First of all, we have to point out that ridges in chips are a major plus. FavorFlav’s Sharon: ‘Ridged chips can never go wrong, if you ask me. So the texture and mouthfeel: top-notch, nothing more needs to be done.’ And the four-person co-testing panel completely agrees.

What we think of Lidl’s chimichurri chips

Now for the flavour. Robbert: ‘Really very tasty. A little spicy, but mainly very herby.’ Sharon, on the other hand, finds the flavour a little hard to place. ‘Not very distinctive, even though chimichurri does have a recognisable flavour.’ Rick isn’t exactly raving either: ‘It mainly tastes like dried herbs. A little too much, even.’ But since chimichurri is largely made with thyme and oregano, Robbert thinks those flavours do come through nicely. I mainly make the connection with a bag of Bolognese chips.

A perfectly decent chip

In short: we miss the flavour of the fresh, tangy sauce. Maybe chimichurri is just a tiny bit too far-fetched. But if you fancy a perfectly decent chip: go ahead and pick up a bag. If you’re craving a chimichurri flavour, though, you may be in for a bit of a disappointment.
