Research shows: you should only eat your chips from these bowls

Every chip lover knows that there can be a huge difference in taste between bags. Naturally, you’re mainly looking for the darkest chips, because they contain the most seasoning and therefore the most flavor. Because the more flavor, the saltier, the better. But research shows that your taste experience depends on many more things.

That’s what the University of Twente investigated. You may already know that many factors play a role in how we experience taste, such as sound (chips that crunch more provide a better taste sensation), but it also matters what you serve them in.
Chips taste best from this bowl
Now, I have to admit that it actually makes perfect sense; after all, I also find wine tastes much better when it’s drunk from a beautiful glass. Maybe it’s typical that I’m relating this back to alcohol again, but that was the first thing I thought of. Because yes, according to research, presentation makes a huge difference when it comes to a bowl of chips.
Researchers discovered that we experience chips as much saltier when they are served in a ridged bowl. The study was conducted as follows: three types of chips were used (no salt, medium salt, and salty), and they were placed in two different bowls (a smooth bowl and one with a textured/ridged surface). And what did they find? The test subjects found the chips from the ridged bowl much saltier and more intense in flavor. So do you want to eat less salt, but still love that salty taste? This might just be the trick you’ve been waiting for.
