Last year, HEMA already introduced spelt and wholegrain kruidnoten, but now you can also buy gluten-free kruidnoten and kruidnoten with less sugar at HEMA.

Good news for vegans

Do you also love kruidnoten but can’t eat them because of a gluten allergy, or because you eat a vegan diet? Then HEMA is the place for you, because the new gluten-free kruidnoten are free from milk and eggs, making them suitable for vegans too (a bag costs €2.50). A bag of the new kruidnoten with 30% less sugar is 50 cents cheaper.

Alongside these new kruidnoten, HEMA also has spelt kruidnoten (at €2) in its range again. These kruidnoten are made from spelt flour and are free from artificial fragrances, colorings and flavorings.

Kruidnoten versus pepernoten

Now that these special kruidnoten are available, that one question immediately comes up again: what exactly is the difference between kruidnoten and pepernoten? Well: pepernoten are those chewy, irregularly shaped chunks that taste somewhat like taaitaai (brilliant name, by the way, because those things really are chewy!) — and, incidentally, contain no pepper whatsoever. Kruidnoten are those delicious, crunchy, hard half-spheres that you can also buy gluten-free and with less sugar at HEMA.
