You’d fly to South America for this sandwich

Can a sandwich be so delicious that you’d book a separate flight just to try it? If I can believe the reviews of the Picnic Elena, then absolutely—and that means I need to fly straight to Argentina. And once I’ve arrived, I’ll have to hurry to Angélica Cocina Maestra in Mendoza, because that’s the restaurant where I can order it.

This restaurant is apparently an incredible recommendation regardless; they serve a fixed menu that revolves entirely around the accompanying wines. A restaurant after my own heart, then.
Not your usual sandwich
And one of those courses is Picnic Elena, a homage to Elena Catena, who was at the helm of the vineyards here and also a great sandwich lover. But if you think you’re being served a club sandwich or a bread roll, think again; this is a whole different ball game. They make the piece of bread themselves (according to them, bread is the soul of every sandwich, so it’s extremely important to get it right), and it’s called ‘pan de campo’. Bread that is traditionally eaten in the morning in Argentina and prepared in mud ovens.
This bread is served with beef and pork—more precisely, beef skirt steak and pork lard. The latter is taken from pancetta and then marinated for 24 hours. And the result is apparently so amazing that people urged others to book a plane ticket to Argentina as soon as possible. A pretty steep total price for a sandwich, but hey; you have to make some sacrifices.
