Who invented salted caramel?

You must have been living under a very large rock if you missed the salted caramel trend over the past few years. At Albert Heijn alone, they now sell more than thirty (!) different products featuring this sought-after duo.

By now, we know the delicious flavor combination from Tony’s Chocolonely, the McFlurry, Mona custard, popcorn, Calvé peanut butter and even Peijnenburg gingerbread.
L’histoire
So who was the legendary inventor we can all thank so warmly? The gentleman’s name is Henri Le Roux, a chocolatier from Brittany. He tried to come up with something original and got the idea for Caramel au Beurre Salé, or caramel with salted butter. At the time, he didn’t yet know that he had come up with pretty much the ultimate flavor combination in the world.
Best Sweet in France
In 1980, Le Roux won the Best Sweet in France award at the Salon International De La Confiserie. To this day, you can still taste the very first salted caramel recipe at several Henri Le Roux shops throughout France. The next time you put a salted caramel product in your basket, take a moment to think of this legend—he certainly deserves it, don’t you think?
